Brief Introduction
The Division of Chemical & Ionizing-radiation Metrology Technology(CLMT) specializes in research, developing, improving chemical and ionizing-radiational metrology technology, being responsible for the establishing and improving traceability system of chemical and ionizing- radiational measurements in Shanghai as well as in East China area; this division also provides verification, calibration and testing services to measuring instruments in chemistry and ionizing-radiation.
CLMT consists of chemical metrology laboratory and ionizing-radiation metrology laboratory. The division also established chemical and Ionizing-radiation primary social public standards in East China area, most of its calibration and testing items have passed the national accreditation of China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS) according to ISO/IEC guide 17025. This division provides nearly 200 certified reference materials (CRMs), including primary and secondary CRMs. It’s broad customer base includes areas such as medical and sanitation, environment, safety, inspection and quarantine, nuclear technology, geology and mineralogy, automation, Non-destruction Testing, etc, it takes a significant role in the economic development and social progress in Shanghai and China.
Service Features
1. Chemical Metrology Laboratory (CML)
Chemical Metrology Laboratory specialized on verification, calibration and testing of chemical instruments, it has emphasized more in establishing and improving the traceability system of chemical measurements, and ensuring the accuracy and traceability of measurement results.
Providing verification and calibrations services for chemical instruments.
The CML has set up a number of primary social public standards in East China area, which are needed by hi-tech industries and the social development. According to the requirements of National Metrological Verification System and relative metrological regulations, it is executing effectively the calibration and testing of items such as spectroscopy, chromatography, electrochemical instrument, gas alarm, etc.
Research and development of reference materials which Ensuring the traceability for the values of chemical measurements.
As Reference material is the core of chemical metrology system, the CML has been permanently dedicating itself to the developing and preparation of RMs. There are nearly 200 species primary and secondary RMs certified by General Administration of Quality Supervision,Inspection and Quarantine of the People’s Republic of China(AQSIQ), which is involved with testing realms such as environmental chemistry, industrial manufacturing, etc., that ensures the accuracy, uniformity and traceability of measurement results. Meanwhile the CML keeps positively on expanding their sample products to those new fields such as booming technologies, biochemistry, trace and ultra-trace elements analysis, etc., intensifies the developing of biochemical metrology RMs, to achieve the uniformity and traceability of biochemical measurement values. As a part in improving the chemical metrology system, the CML is researching actively, with the effective resources, on the practical application of the RMs on instruments calibrations, measurement technique evaluations and products quality inspections.
2. Ionizing Radiation Metrology Laboratory (IML)
The Ionizing Radiation Metrology Laboratory (IML) of SIMT is one of the earliest labs in this field in China. The works includes radiation dosimetry, radioactivity measurement and radiochemistry. IML is equipped with advanced instruments, it has established more than twenty primary social public standard of Shanghai or East China. The IML offers a variety of services, calibration of ion-chamber therapy dosimeters, radiation protection meters, environmental monitoring instruments, site/personal radiation monitors and annunciators, measurement and testing of radiation protection material, radioactive Source and X-ray device, radioactivity analysis of environmental and biological samples. The IML became a member of The IAEA/WHO Network of Secondary Standards Dosimetry Laboratories (SSDL Network) in 1980s. SSDL Network was established in 1976 as a joint project between the IAEA and the World Health Organization (WHO). The SSDL is responsible for ensuring the unification and accurate of radiation dosimetry value around the world. IML positively participate in the dose comparison, cooperative research and academic exchange, to keep coincident with the international standards and methods.
The site-verifications for radiotherapy beams and the calibrations for ion-chamber therapy dosimeters
To satisfy the present irradiation therapy, the effect of treatment depends on the accuracy of the dose given to the patient, which should be within 5%. Especially when dose rate is high, it could be hurt even dreadful if the dose is incorrect. To insure the dose within 5%, it is not adequate only rely on the metrology system of the treating machine. The IML, equipped with the verification device for external radiotherapy beams and the three-dimensioned water phantom dosimeter system, actualizes the site verification for therapy accelerators and cobalt treating machines. It undertakes the verifications and calibrations for ion-chamber therapy dosimeters. A rounded traceability of the radiation treatment dose value is well presented to ensure the effect and safety of the treatment. For some special instruments (as pin-point chambers), the regular verifications may cause in extra deviation, the IML calibrates them directly in absorbed dose to water to avoid this error.
Instruments calibrations on radiation protection and environmental monitoring
The analysis of radioactive nuclides by energy spectrum and the low radioactive detecting
Radiations in our circumstance directly affect our healthy and living quality, which is highly noticed by public. The IML, with the advanced low-background high-purity germanium and low background α-β counter, adopting the γ spectrum analysis and the low radioactive technique, provides the tests of radioactive content for various materials and samples, such as the isotope contents detect of radium, thorium, kalium in architectural materials, and the radioactive test for foodstuffs and drinking waters.
Providing the activity measurements for punctuate sources and radioactive solutions
The activity represents the strength of radiation, the IML, taking the punctuate reference sources, standard radioactive solutions and standard activity-meter as the reference, applying the techniques as the separate-encapsulation of radioactive solutions, film punctuate sources preparation combined with the instrumentation of γ spectrometer and 4πγchamber, presents the activity measurements for punctuate sources and radioactive solutions.
3. Biological Metrology Laboratory (BML)
BML performs fundamental and applied research on the measurement of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids, using Next Generation Sequencing (NSG), digital PCR (dPCR) and biosensors. The laboratory provides biological instruments calibration, reference materials, to guarantee the confidence in measurement needed by advance biotechnology, food safety, DNA forensics, biomedical and health care:
